Our History
A grassroots effort of community volunteers, the Niskayuna Community Foundation was founded on December 31, 1999, upon signing an agreement to become an affiliate and geographic fund of the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region (CFGCR).
As a result, the Niskayuna Community Foundation combines the advantages of a traditional community foundation with CFGCR's nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, resources, and administrative and investment support. The Niskayuna Community Foundation has the permanence and flexibility of a standalone foundation and the independence of a separate volunteer Board of Directors with the ability to direct resources to support the town of Niskayuna and its residents.
More than 1,000 Founding Members made contributions to the Founders Campaign. A plaque recognizing the Founding Members is located in the Niskayuna Town Hall.
About the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region
Since 1968, the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region has worked to strengthen the Greater Capital Region through philanthropy. The Foundation collaborates with donors and community partners who share their vision for community transformation through stewardship of charitable endowments, superior donor services, effective grantmaking, and leadership to address community needs.
In 2020, the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region (CFGCR) helped our fund advisors distribute over $10.7 million in grants and scholarships in the Capital Region and beyond. CFGCR is comprised of more than 450 charitable funds created by a diverse group of individuals, families, and corporations. In addition, several local independent foundations (the Bender Family Foundation, the John D. Picotte Family Foundation, the McCarthy Charities, the B'nai B'rith Gideon Foundation, Carl. E. Touhey Foundation, and the Review Foundation) contract with the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region for grantmaking assistance.
Through flexible donor services, strategic grantmaking, and community leadership, the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region helps people support the causes they care about, now, and for generations to come.
